In order for vaccines to have any effectiveness, you first need a healthy immune system.
Vaccinations work hand in hand with your immune system to provide the additional support against illnesses. An unhealthy immune system means an ineffective vaccination. Studies have shown that the older you are, the less effective the flu vaccine becomes. This is a direct result of an age-related decline in immune response due to the decline of key nutrients.
The amino acids L-theanine and L-cystine are known for their ability to boost factors of the immune system that are diminished with age: glutathione and interleukin-2. Glutathione is the major antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and reactive oxygen compounds and is essential for the immune system to exert its full potential. Interleukin-2 is a cytokine that is important for antibody production and for the differentiation, long-term growth, and proper functioning of T cells.
L-theanine, an amino acid and phytochemical found mainly in tealeaves, is an immune booster. Theanine is known to stimulate glutathione. L-theanine also enhances the immune system by stimulating the release of immune system proteins called cytokines. L-theanine also contributes to the absorption of another amino acid important to the immune responsiveness: L-cystine. The amino acid L-cystine is a precursor to the antioxidant glutathione.
Keeping a healthy immune system by supporting your body with the appropriate nutrients is key in the fight against common illnesses. Without your immune system, even the supplemental help of a vaccine can be futile in your defenses. Your number one best defense during the flu and cold season is to make sure your immune system is at it’s peak of health.
