Vitamin D” is a term that references both vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). There has been considerable debate about whether these two forms are equivalent in their actions. In a paper published this month in Frontiers in Immunology, researchers now noting that people who received vitamin D2 supplementation had different immune-related changes in gene expression compared to vitamin D3.

Did you know? Vitamin D3 is a hormone?

Our body has 30,000 genes and Vitamin D has been shown to influence 2,000 of them.

There are 36 organ tissues in the body whose cells respond to Vitamin D.  Vitamin D is important because it is associated with diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, infertility and PMS, fatigue and depression, autoimmune disorders, obesity and Syndrome X and lastly and largely cancer.

Many studies show that you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half.  Vitamin D even fights colds and flu because it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system.  It literally attacks and destroys bacteria and viruses.

How to optimize your Vitamin D levels

Sunlight is the best source.  Just 10 to 15 minutes a day with at least 40% of your skin exposed is all you need.  In the summer, for example, wearing your swimsuit, if you are exposed for 30 minutes to sunlight, your body produces 20,000 IU’s of Vitamin D.    Other sources of Vitamin D are high-quality oral supplements and injectible Vitamin D3.

The optimal range of D3 is 60-70 nmol/l.  A deficient level of Vitamin D3 is below 50 nmol/l.

To avoid your risk of over dosing or under dosing on this crucial nutrient, I recommend you have an accurate test of your D3 levels for a more effective, specific dosage.
